The Dreaded Day is Upon Me! November 23, 2006

Filed under: Life...? — megs @ 10:30 pm

Wouldn’t you know it, but two horribly momentous things are happening on the same day. Today I join the aged, and today the movers come to take away all my stuff. Stress-inducing, to say the least. For some reason though, my extended family (cousins and aunts and whatnot) all seem to think that my birthday was yesterday. I got a bunch of e-mails (which was lovely) and my aunt called my Mom to find out what my address is, here in Alberta, so she could send me a birthday card. Weird. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten a birthday card or birthday wish from this aunt, or these particular cousins. Strange, but nice, all at the same time. I’ll take it, either way. Maybe it was leaked out that I’m turning the dreaded 30, and they all wanted to send me condolences. Who knows. It was nice of them, at least.

So the movers are coming this morning at 8am. They actually called yesterday at like 9am and were like, “We’re going to be there this afternoon, okay?” Um, how about NO!? The last date they said they would be here was FRIDAY. To call on Wednesday and step it up two days is NOT COOL. So, they called again this afternoon and tried to bully me into agreeing to move at midnight. I know. I’m sure my neighbours would LOVE that. So, after three conversations with these people, the driver is coming at 8am. Jeez. I think I’m packed… but I worry about losing stuff.

The way this works is, they start from BC with an empty truck, and stop along the way, picking up people’s stuff, then drop it off where the customer has asked. So, I’m hoping that they have some identifying system, so that my stuff doesn’t ‘disappear’ or get given to the wrong person. I asked the woman at the company if I should put my name on all my boxes, and she actually sounded insulted. So here’s hoping they know what they’re doing (just in case, I put my initials on most of them). I guess they make a list of every article/box that goes into the truck, then check that list against the things being unloaded at the end stop. It makes me nervous, either way.

So I have finally heard back from a friend in Ontario (one of my closest) and we have made plans to commiserate together… we’ve both aged and we both hate it. We’ve planned a night of pink champagne (a tradition that hasn’t been practiced since I moved to Alberta… very sad), and steak-eating at the Keg Mansion, followed by drinking and dancing and general debauchery at the Velvet Underground. I can’t wait!! FINALLY, a friend in one of two provinces acts like they’re happy I’m going to be in their general vicinity. Yeesh.

I called my mechanic yesterday, to ask if he could recommend a scrap yard for my car (I put up signs to sell it, but haven’t had a call yet), and his wife actually said that they’d have no problem selling my car! She even agreed to take care of it all for me, since I’m going to be leaving Alberta on Saturday! I know, it sounds sketchy, but I trust them. They’re really, really nice, and when I called and told her that I needed to get rid of my car because I was moving back to Ontario, she asked, “Oh! Is this Megan?” She remembered me from all the times I’ve been in there! It was really nice. So, it’s looking like I might have things mostly tied up here… there is still the problem with Alberta Health, and my CAA membership, but I figure I’ll call from Ontario, when I have more time.

So… that’s about it from my world for a while. Obviously, I’ll write more when I get back to Ontario, but I’ll have to fight my mother for the computer, so we’ll have to see how that goes…

I’m going to miss my car…
